2004 Oregon Trip
Inside the cave

The cave has at least three natural entrances. One is shown at the left side of this picture, the second (and probably main entrance for the stellar sea lions) is at the right of this picture. The third entrance is a hole in the north side of the cliff that drops straight to the ocean below. The floor of the cave as far, as the tourists are concerned, is about 40 feet above the ocean. There is chain link fencing at the edge of the bluff to prevent anyone from climbing down to the animals.
Notice the yellow line running through the far cliff. Below the line is volcanic rock, probably basalt. The yellow line and the deposits above it are sedimentary rock. There is a fault running along the ceiling that is easily seen at certain places inside the cave and is responsible for the cave. Water seeped through the fault line and over the course of the past 25 million years formed the cave.
I have a 27 second Quick-time clip from the cave. Warning, it's 6 megabytes so it takes awhile to download.
